Located near the Arenal Volcano National Park, 5.5 kilometers from La Fortuna in San Carlos, very close to Cerro Chato.
There are various options:
- From the Inter-American Highway, take the detour in Cañas heading for Tilarán, pass through Nuevo Arenal and finally get to La Fortuna.
- Another alternative would be: Alajuela – Naranjo – San Ramón – Chachagua – La Fortuna. Or the route: Alajuela – Naranjo – Zarcero – Ciudad Quesada – La Fortuna.
- Once in the center of La Fortuna, from the Catholic Church go 1 km south and 4 km west.
How to Get to the La Fortuna Waterfall?
There are two routes to the La Fortuna Waterfall. The two access roads are in very good condition, thanks to the road infrastructure projects that the Association of Integral Development of La Fortuna runs together with institutions such as the Ministry of Public Works And DINADECO.
From La Fortuna by Zeta Trece
This route through the neighborhood “Zeta Trece” is a paved asphalt road in excellent condition, and is convenient for people coming from the hotels that are west of La Fortuna, by the Arenal Volcano or the Arenal Dam.
Starting from La Fortuna, the route is 5.6 km, and it takes about 15 minutes to reach the destination.
Access to the waterfall is from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

It offers vast scenic beauty surrounded by abundant vegetation, and a great variety of flora and fauna. The waterfall is produced by the waters of the Fortuna River and by tributaries located in the mountains of the area.
To appreciate this natural beauty of the district of La Fortuna in San Carlos, you can go on a horseback riding tour where along the way you can appreciate pastures, forest and high hills, in addition to extraordinary views of the San Carlos Valley. After that, you will walk on marked trails near the waterfall to see volcanic rocks.
At the end of about 20 minutes you can see the entire waterfall and the pool where visitors can swim, take pictures, and relax in the beautiful natural environment.
It is valuable to note that proceeds from visits to the waterfall are used by the Development Association for social projects and activities in the region.
